college life

Crisp autumnal air settles into our lungs. Winter is caught in the corner of my eye for a split second. In between seasons, the type of season, when the clothing departments don’t know what stock to put out, and the weather is a cocktail of emotions and temperatures.

Despite it being evening, it’s already dark outside, as we sit on our cold metal balcony. Rugby boys’ shouting is drowned out by our laughter.

Below us, a car pulls up with a somewhat familiar face. Shouting words I couldn’t quite comprehend, we are on our feet, shouting “go!go!go!” while slamming doors shut. The man’s door broke momentarily due to the constant demand. Two older students handing out free alcohol from the boot of their car on this crisp Wednesday evening.

Two cans each in our hands, skipping back up the stairs. Back on the balcony, we watch others run up to the boot of the car, childlike smiles on tired students’ faces.

Cheering as the familiar face throws cans up to the balcony near us, throwing a house party. Each cheer gets out as the cans keep flying, and we keep getting tipsy.

I love college life. I know a girl who ran nearly ten minutes to get two cans of free drink, while her stove was left on. I love college life. I think if we acted like college students for the rest of our lives, society would be happier.

Free drinks from the boot of an older student’s car would solve everything.
